6. Duplication of building damage due to ground motion and liquefaction

It is necessary to sum up with consideration of duplication in order to get the total amount of damaged buildings, because the number of damaged buildings due to ground motion and liquefaction are estimated separately.

In order to consider this duplication, the larger one of them is adopted as the total amount of damaged buildings for each calculation unit (for example "mesh") in many earthquake damage assessments. This estimation method is based on actual experience that there were few damaged buildings due to ground motion in liquefied area, although there were a lot of damaged buildings in the same area. In other words, this experience means that the building damage in liquefied area was mainly induced by liquefaction.

: Building damage ratio due to liquefaction in calculation unit [-]

: Total damage ratio of buildings in calculation unit [-]

As one of other methods, following relationship is used also in many earthquake damage assessments in order to get the total damage ratio of buildings in calculation unit.
