Abstract

A comparative study of seismic evaluation from Indian standard and Japanese standard was done for a 3 storied RC building with unreinforced brick masonry infill walls. Japanese standard for seismic evaluation has no provisions for brick infill walls hence a methodology is proposed to incorporate the effect of brick masonry infill and openings in Japanese seismic evaluation method. Comparison is also done with pushover analysis and available experimental results for infill wall to judge the adequacy of proposed methodology. For Indian standard based evaluation, preliminary evaluation as well as detailed evaluation was done including Demand Capacity Ratio evaluation as well as pushover analysis for both the directions. The comparison of the seismic evaluation of target building from the two standards show that the Japanese standard results were more conservative. Pushover analysis result comparison of bare frame and infill wall also show the advantage of incorporating infill walls in structural model. Indian standard for seismic design does not prescribe pushover analysis hence recommendations were also made in this regard.
