4.9 Kawase & Matsuo (2004)

1)      Reference

Hiroshi Kawase and hidenori Matsuo, 2004, Relationship of S-wave Velocity Structures and Site Effects Separated from the Observed Strong Motion Data of K-NET, and JMA Network, Japan Association for Earthquake Engineering, vol. 4, No. 4, 126-145 (in Japanese).

2)      Used strong motion data

- Area: Japan: (K-NET, KiK-net, JMA station)

- Type of earthquake:

- Period: 1996-2002

- Number of events: 228

- Number of records:

- Magnitude: Mj≥4.5

3)      Formula for estimation

Kawase and Matsuo (2004) have evaluated the relationship between average shear-wave velocity and site amplification factor using strong motion data obtained by K-Net, KiK-net, and JMA station. They have concluded that the average shear-wave velocity over only 10m from the surface is sufficient to predict site factor quantitatively for PGA and PGV, as well as JMA seismic intensity scale.

Gj: site coefficient at j point of PGA, PGV and A0 (A0; conversion acceleration to obtain instrumental seismic intensity)

Vsj: average shear-wave velocity from surface to a depth of j
