5. Abstract:
This report presents the current status of seismic observation in Iran with an emphasis on the activities of International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES), and services provided by this organization. The analysis of historical and instrumental data shows that Iran is a seismically active region. As an example the seismicity map and computed strain release contour map were presented for the country using 20th century data to show the distinct active regions like Albortz and Zagros Mountain Ranges. However for both historical and instrumental earthquake data the results of analyses are accompanied by considerable uncertainties. These uncertainties have been due to incorrect information and poor documentation in the historical data and poor distribution of seismic stations or lack of a well designed seismic network for the instrumental data.

Considering the great importance of seismological studies in Iran and the above mentioned reasons, IIEES in addition to its other activities has established the Iranian National Seismic Network (INSN) in the country. INSN is planning to install 48 broadband seismic station in the near future. On the other hand IIEES has the important responsibility of the maintenance of 3 IMS seismic stations along with the management of NDC in Iran. IIEES plans to continue and develop its programs towards expanding scientific cooperation and exchange of knowledge in the international level.
