This
paper investigates a new device called oval leaf spring mounts (OLS) to protect
sensitive equipment from external source vibrations. The main outcomes of this
study are to represent the cyclic force-displacement from finite element
analyses by the Bouc-Wen model of hysteresis which permit to identify the
required parameters for further seismic analyses. The performance of the device
through its implementation into a cooling tower mounted in the rooftop of 8th
story structure was evaluated. The efficiency of the device under several
earthquakes was investigated. The obtained results from seismic analyses have
shown the ability of the OLS device to reduce the seismic input sufficiently in
the cooling tower without significant displacement and in both horizontal and
vertical directions.
