Website Information

The International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (IISEE) is an organization established in January 1962 in the Building Research Institute (BRI) to carry out the International Training on Seismology and Earthquake Engineering. The first course of this training was carried out in 1960 supported by Japanese universities and research institutions. Therefore, this training has about 50-years history. Since 1960 more than 2,027 participants from around 105 countries and regions have completed training courses of the IISEE.

Among our training courses, the annual training course (so called the regular course) consists of Seismology, Earthquake Engineering, and Tsunami Disaster Mitigation courses, and it is implemented in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Since the 2005-2006 course, a part of the curriculum of the regular course is approved as a master's degree program by the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) and the IISEE/BRI. Acquiring required credits during the training, participants are awarded a Master's degree, "Master of Disaster Management" ("Master of Disaster Mitigation" for the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 courses) by the GRIPS and the IISEE/BRI.

This IISEE website provides up-to-date information in the fields of seismology, earthquake engineering, and earthquake and tsunami disaster Mitigation for ex-participants, researchers, engineers and all visitors.
