1. IISEE Annual Training Course was closed

The 48th Annual Training on Seismology, Earthquake Engineering and Tsunami
Disaster Mitigation courses (so called Regular Course) cooperated with GRIPS
and JICA, which started on October 3rd last year was closed on September
18th. The 25 participants from 16 countries were awarded master's degree in
disaster mitigation. As of September 19th, the total number of
ex-participants of IISEE reaches 1,357 from 95 countries. After returning to
their own countries, they are expected to play active roles in the fields of
seismology, earthquake engineering and tsunami disaster mitigation.

2. CISMID Conference celebrating 50th Anniversary of the Academic Exchange

The CISMID (Japan-Peru Center for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation) organized
the above mentioned conference on 4th September on the occasion of the 50th
Anniversary of the Academic Exchange between Peru and Japan.
Dr. Zavala, director of CISMID, invited me as a representative of IISEE to
make a key-note presentation. In my presentation, I reflected the memory of
training course and JICA Project during 1986-1993, and indicated the needs
of future cooperation.

3. IISEE Alumni Meeting in Beijing, China

We are planning to hold the IISEE Alumni Meeting during the 14th World
Conference on Earthquake Engineering (14WCEE) that is held from October 12th
to 17th in Beijing, China. Further information will be given at the
conference venue and at the IISEE exhibition booth in the conference. Dr.
Yokoi, Dr. Saito and Dr. Kashima will participate in the conference from
IISEE. If you intend to participate in the conference, please contact us.

4. Mr. Peter Welkner M. (1964-65S, Chile) passed away

Mr. Peter Welkner M. was an enthusiastic participant about all of the IISEE
activities. It is with the deepest regrets that I have to inform you that my
father, Mr. Peter Welkner M., passed away on April 16th, 2004. Kindest
regards, and thank you very much for your interest.

5. Mr. Manuel P. Lechuga (1963-64E, Philippines) passed away

I, Manuel D. Lechuga Jr., on behalf of my father, Manuel P. Lechuga,
regretfully would like to inform you that my father already passed away for
several years ago. My late father was very pleased and thankful for being a
scholar of your prestigious Institute. He benefited much from what he had
learned. He was given another scholarship by the USAID in the Bureau of
Reclamation in the United States of America. Before his retirement from
National Power Corporation, he served two more important positions as
Regional Manager of the entire Visayas Region Office and Manager of the
Engineering Design Department, Head Office. My sincere apology for not
giving the same informations beforehand.
