The second session meeting of the IPRED (International Platform for
Reducing Earthquake Disaster) was held together with UNESCO-IPRED-ITU
workshop at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in Turkey on 5-7 July
2009. In the meeting, the IISEE proposed how to deal with the request to
translate IISEE-UNESCO Lecture Notes in local languages, and it was
approved. It contains that the IPRED members and the UNESCO take
responsibility for translation to their languages and other languages,
respectively. For the detail, please refer to the guideline that will be
carried on the IISEE website soon.

"Fundamental Concepts of Earthquake Engineering" presents the concepts,
procedures, and code provisions that are currently being used to make
structures as earthquake-resistant as is presently feasible. The book begins
by describing the purpose, main aspects, and historical development of
earthquake engineering and provides an overview of the type and extent of
damage an earthquake can produce. It then introduces the concepts of
seismology, the mechanisms of earthquake generation and propagation, and the
difference between the various scales used to quantify the size of an
earthquake and its potential to cause damage. The book also discusses the
response spectrum and the different ways earthquake ground motions may be
characterized and how local soil conditions may affect ground motion
characteristics. Later chapters examine the design spectrum, conventional
methods used to calculate the response of structures, soil-structure
systems, and nonstructural components to earthquake ground motions. The
book also offers an introductory description of modern techniques for the
protection of structures against earthquake effects.

The sad news of ex-participant's death that we received is as follows.
Mr. Marcelo Horacio MILLAN (1982-83S, Argentina) passed away in 2008.
We pray sincerely for the repose of his soul.
Also we are really grateful to the ex-participant who gave us information
above.
