Today, July 1, 2010, is the 50th Anniversary of the International
Training in Seismology and Earthquake Engineering. Congratulation for
all the people concerned in the training! I'm very happy to inform you
this anniversary as the director of the International Institute of
Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (IISEE). The brief history
of the training is as follows:

July 1, 1960 - March 24, 1961: The first training (Seismology and
Earthquake Engineering Courses) was held at University of Tokyo
supported by OTCA (present JICA).

1961 - 1962: The second training was hosted by the Building Research
Institute (BRI).
Jan. 1962: Establishment of the IISEE in the BRI as an institute to
implement and provide training courses.
Sep. 1963 - Aug. 1972: UNESCO supported the training as the joint
project with Japan.
Oct. 2005: Establishment of the Master program with the GRIPS.
Oct. 2006: Establishment of Tsunami Disaster Mitigation Course.

As of today, 1,435 participants from 96 counties and region have
completed the training courses including regular (annual), seminar,
global seismological observation, China seismic building, and individual
courses. I appreciate all the participants, lecturers, staff members,
etc. for their continuous contribution to the training.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the international training in
Seismology and Earthquake Engineering this year and that of the IISEE
in the coming 2012, we will have a series of events and activities; major
ones of them are given below. Please join these events and activities on
this historical milestone of the IISEE endeavor.

- July 1: The announcement of the 50th anniversary of the international
training in seismology and earthquake engineering in the IISEE
newsletter (the first article of this issue).
- September: The 1000th participant of the annual course will complete
the training course.
- Publication of Bulletin of the IISEE with special issues for the 50th
anniversary (we are calling for papers; see
https://iisee.kenken.go.jp/en/newsletter/newsletter-55/ for details).
We plan to pubish special issues during 2010-2012.
- Publication of YEAR BOOK with special topics on the 50th anniversary.

[2011]
- Publication of Bulletin of the IISEE with special issues for the 50th
anniversary.

[2012]
- The International Symposium for the 50th anniversary of the
international training and IISEE.
- Publication of Bulletin of the IISEE with special issues for the 50th
anniversary.
- Publication of YEAR BOOK with special topics on the 50th anniversary.
